Thrush, The Symptoms And The Cure!

Many women are affected by vaginal thrush at some point in their lives and it may recur regularly!

Thrush, is also known as Candida or Candidosis and is a yeast infection caused by the Candida species of fungus.

"Thrush can be treated without a doctor's prescription. Thrush is normally treated using creams and pessarys"

Diagnosis of vaginal thrush is initially from the vaginal discharge, but if you are unsure then visit your GP or local GUM clinic where they will perform a pelvic examination and take a vaginal swab to check.

In women vaginal thrush can have the following symptoms:

  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • Discharge (normally thick and white)
  • Redness
  • Soreness and swelling of the vagina and vulva

In men thrush can occur and cause the following symptoms:

  • Irritation to the head of the penis
  • Redness

You may be advised the following to prevent outbreaks:

  • Avoid perfumed soaps, vaginal deodorants or douches
  • Avoid using latex condoms, spermicidal creams and lubricants
  • Change tampons frequently or use sanitary towels
  • Wearing cottons underwear and lose fitting clothes will help

Thrush can be passed on very easily, and most commonly it is caught from having sexual intercourse with a partner who has a candida infection.

Fact: You may continue to have sexual intercourse whilst being treated for thrush, but you must use a condom to prevent spreading the infection to your partner.
