HIV and AIDS

HIV is the base virus that causes AIDS!

AIDS is a serious condition in which the body's defences are weakened and broken down, preventing the body from fighting off illness. This means that people who have AIDS suffer from many illness, which a normal healthy person can fight off quite easily.

"HIV is passed on from having sexual intercourse with an infected person, as well as from blood"

This means that even if you are not having sex but are a drug user who shares needles you are at risk of catching the HIV virus.

You can also get the virus from oral sex as exchange of fluids from the body pass into the mouth and should you have a cut or bleeding gums, ulcers etc then the virus can get into your blood stream.

If someone has HIV/AIDS then you should always wear a condom when having any form of sexual intercourse.

Facts and Fiction regarding HIV and Aids

There is currently no cure for HIV. However more and more tests and drug trials have been carried out of the years and doctor's have been able to control the virus once a person is infected, this means that if you have HIV you can stay healthy for longer, but this only helps control the virus and is not a cure.

"You can not get the virus from kissing, hugging, shaking hands, dirty glasses or door handles"

If you think you might have put yourself at risk then it may be worth while attending either your local GUM clinic or GP and asking for a blood test to check for HIV/AIDS.

Fact: The only way to help prevent getting HIV/AIDS is to always practice safe sex using condoms and dental dams and by both being tested before having unprotected sexual intercourse.
