Gonorrhoea True or False?

Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacterium called neisseria gonorrheoae or gonococcus!

It can be passed from person to person through sexual intercourse, oral sex, anal sex intimate physical contact, sharing sex toys and from mother to child, during child birth.

"Gonorrhoea is also commonly called the clap"

Gonorrhoea needs treating as a case of urgency once contracted, as, if it is left untreated, the disease can cause serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease.

Symptoms of Gonorrhoea in both men and women will generally display within a period of 1-14 days after the initial infection.

"Gonorrhoea is treated with antibiotics, but you will have to be retested after you have finished the antibiotics to make sure the infection is clear"

Below is a list of the symptoms that may be displayed in either men or women. If you display any of the symptoms or are simply worried that you may have been in contact with a person infected with Gonorrhoea, you should visit your GP or local GUM clinic.

At the clinic the doctor or nurse will take a sample culture from the penis or cervix, where it will tested for the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoea.
