Chlamydia - What's The Truth?

The most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK!

Chlamydia is passed on through having unprotected sex with someone who is already infected. This includes vaginal or anal sex and can also be passed on from sharing sex toys. Chlamydia is the common name for this infection and is caused by the bacterium 'Chlamydia Trachomstis'.

The bacteria can live inside the cells of the cervix, the uretha, the rectum and sometimes the throat and eyes.

"It is a common and treatable infection, which often has no symptoms in men or women unless it leads to complications"

If Chlamydia is left untreated it may cause more serious problems in the future. Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics, once it been diagnosed by urine and swab tests either by your GP or at your nearest GUM clinic, which you will find listed in your local phone directory.

Some of the most common symptoms associated with Chlamydia in women are:

  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Pain during sex
  • Bleeding between periods and after sex

*In women the infection can spread into the pelvis which can cause severe pain. This condition is called Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID).

Where as in men it generally shows as:

  • Pain or burning when passing urine
  • A clear/white discharge from the end of the penis
  • Painful swelling of the testicles

*In men, the infection can spread to the testicles causing them to become hot, swollen and painful, which can lead to infertility.

Fact: You must not have sexual intercourse until you have been told that the infection is clear. To reduce your chances of catching Chlamydia always use a condom.
